We met in our second-year varsity through a group of friends. We first got to know eachother as friends and it turned out to be the greatest love ever. Since the day we met, we have been inseparable.
The proposal was so special. We got engaged in the home we would be living in as husband and wife. I did not suspect a thing - when I opened the door there were flower petals, balloons, champagne, fairy lights, the most beautiful engagement ring any woman can dream of and he was on one knee with a bouquet of flowers.
The planning process was such a spectacular experience. We decided not to have a wedding planner and to rather do all the planning together. It was an incredible journey as we also learnt so much about each other. We had no clue were to start and did our research through various magazines and websites, including SAWeddings.co.za for guidance and inspiration.
We made use of various platforms such as magazines, wedding websites, Pinterest and Instagram. We also combined a lot of ideas to create our own unique style that suits our personalities.
The most memorable and special part of our wedding day was that moment when our eyes met for the first time while I was walking down the aisle. It felt like we were the only two people in existence at that moment. Another breathtaking moment was when we saw our reception hall for the first time, it was so overwhelmingly beautiful and exceeded all our expectations.
Our theme was floral with soft and beautiful colours - a lot of flowers and fairy lights. We wanted an elegant, but spontaneous fairytale feel as we wanted to capture our personalities and make our guests feel enchanted.
The dress every girl dreams of her entire life. The most important thing was that I wanted Zandré to catch his breath when he saw me coming down the aisle. I am quite plain, so I wanted something bold and different for our big day. Something elegant, with a twist of sass, but still comfortable. The bridesmaid dresses were soft and elegant with feather earrings and nude open toe heels for a classic look.
I always dreamed of Zavion Kotze doing the florals and décor for my wedding. When the time finally came, it was more than I could have ever wanted. Zavion, John, Chef Andrew and the entire team just understood our vision and personalities and turned it into our own fairytale.
Yes, we really tried to involve our family and friends in the planning process. We made our own table numbers, seating chart, welcome board and our own stationary. My mother and grandmother also made the little flower girl dresses which was so spectacular. We got married on Easter Friday 19 April 2019, so our favourite DIY item was an “Easter Egg Tree” we created with over 300 Easter Eggs hanging from the tree, so guests can pick the eggs before the wedding ceremony.
We chose a song from a new and upcoming Afrikaans group called Wolwe-Dans. The song is called “trouliedjie” and the lyrics really meant a lot to us. Wolwe-Dans also performed live during our canape hour.
Our first dance was really a highlight moment. We were dancing on a cloud of smoke for the first time as husband and wife. It felt like a dream come true.
Our advice would be to enjoy every second of planning. It is more than just planning for your big day; it is the start of your lives together and really a great opportunity for the two of you to operate as a team. Choose the best possible suppliers and really take in every moment on the day as it goes past so quickly.
We went to Zanzibar for our honeymoon. The clear blue water and skies were mesmerising. It was really a special time for us to reflect on the journey and to look forward to our future together.
