Well it was a modern-day love story that started online. A dating app, Zoosk, to be precise.
Damian whisked me away to Calitzdorp for a romantic weekend away. Calitzdorp and the Klein Karoo has a very special place in my heart and he knew incase there was a shadow of a doubt in my mind, he would put me in the right mood, in perfect setting and he’d be in the money! At the end of the weekend he proposed to me in our room at the Guest House, covered in bougainvillea petals. It was just beautiful.
It was tough! I’m and interior decorator and business owner, so I “plan” for a living, but nothing could have prepared me for this. There is just no room for error on your wedding day.
You do what you know, so I treated our wedding planning like a job, and we dominated with endless lists on numerous spreadsheets. In the last week we were able to delegate tasks between family and friends – it took a village!
Damian: Seeing Robyn for the first time in her exquisite dress, with her hair so beautiful and her face so stunning – this gorgeous woman walking down the aisle to me. Then the speeches during the reception, all the faces in the room of people we cared so much for - the special words shared and the heartfelt aspirations for us were melting moments.
Robyn: Walking back into the venue after our photos, into the reception area. It was just the warmest, happiest most beautiful space I could have imagined, filled with the people we loved most in the world. We could not have asked for more.
We had no theme, we just wanted our wedding to be fresh, colourful, cosy and intimate. Our venue was the perfect backdrop for this, both inside and out.
With a serious budget, I decided to rent my dress and don’t regret it for a second. It was love at first sight – a more perfect dress could not have been made for me. It was a brand new imported dress from Europe and I was the first to wear it! I fell in love with the simplicity of it and the detail in the original French lace.
We got engaged in Spring. So when we first started thinking about flowers, we were just inspired by what we saw around us – spring garden flowers. And that was our starting point for the look of our loose table arrangements, in our own collection of antique bottles along with silver candle stick holders, smaller t-lights and pillar candles.
We made all our own stationary, so invites, menus, place tags, seating plan and some other fun stuff. We also made our rose petal confetti cones for the ceremony.
Ellie Goulding – Still Falling for You
So many of the lyrics were so pertinent to us and our relationship, that we felt we wanted this to be part of our beginning. We loved the song and we really enjoyed our first dance.
Our first dance, as husband and wife, after spending hours and hours learning to dance as a couple, was just awesome. We just had fun.
It is only one day, it is over in a flash – it is still to blur me, so don’t break the bank! There are so many ways to save money… Rent a dress, rent the suits, choose seasonal flowers, ask a family member bake your wedding cake. And stick to the chicken dish. Who remembers what they ate at a wedding? Spend your money on an amazing photographer. At the end of the day, all you will have left are your memories and your photos.
We decided we were rather going to splurge on the most romantic honeymoon we could think of and so 3 months after the wedding in June, we headed to Italy up the Amalfi Coast to Positano and ended off our time in Rome.
