Tim and I had worked in the same building for almost 2 years before going on our first date. Our companies actually work closely together as well so this generally would have been a no go. It was after we’d both come out of other relationships that we ended up going out one day to buy shoes (not for me) but for him! Don’t know if it was his choice in shoes but from that day we’ve not been apart. We jumped right in, moving in together 3 months later. This was it, all or nothing, no more take backs.
He proposed in front of the fireplace of a holiday house we often go to in Paternoster. He used my moms engagement ring which we later had altered.
Half way through the planning process we found out I was pregnant so the wedding and all original plans were put on hold. Needless to say our whole wedding concept changed after that into more of a DIY approach had used all sources in the original planning.
We wanted something as relaxed as possible. We were stressed enough with a newborn. A friend of mines daughter had done the picnic theme and this suited us perfectly. It also meant families could attend and there was enough to keep both kids and adults entertained. We even hired a magician for the adults, pony rides for the kids, and our favourtie Sax player George.
The most memorable would have to be christening our son directly after saying our vows and Tim being made to hold him up like a scene out of the Lion King.
Country picnic – because it was relaxed and honestly, extremely cost effective. We also didn’t want to follow the mold of a typical wedding, so we didn’t have a first dance, or lengthy speeches. Everyone could just enjoy.
None in particular, but I do love lace and subtle embellishments. I found it on a website called Still White and wasn’t even able to try it on due to being pregnant, but I took the risk anyway and it paid off.
We wanted light English country type décor. Mixed bunches of flowers (bought straight from the wholesaler) in a variety of containers collected amongst our friends. I ultimately roped one individual into planning this portion for us. We used lanterns, hessian bunting, loads of ribbon, and nik naks all either made by or thought of by Anke.
Almost everything was DIY done by Anke
We didn’t have an opening dance. Our aisle song was John Legends, All of Me with live sax.
The weather had started out terribly with drizzle on the way to the venue, but as we were saying our vows the sun peaked through lighting up the whole gazebo. Seemed fated.
Try and think of the day from your guest’s perspective as well, if they’re enjoying then you’ll enjoy! It’s about what your there to do which is commit to the love of your life, nobody cares about the place settings. Keep it relaxed and happy.
The proper honeymoon will have to wait. We took our 6 month old son and spent a week in the house we got engaged in directly after the wedding though.
I am a Cape Town based wedding photographer, and am available for weddings throughout South Africa. I want to tell your story and create works of art from your wedding day.
