I moved schools in the middle of my grade 10 year (July 2010). That is when I met Wian, also a grade 10 learner at the new school. We started dating in November 2010. In 2012 we were chosen as the head boy and head girl of the school. It was a good but challenging year and at the end of that year we broke off our relationship. Wian went to Stellenbosch and I went overseas. We both know now that those few months apart was needed. We had to grow as individuals in order for us to be better together and for each other. We kept contact and the day after my plane landed in May 2013 Wian was in front of my door with a bunch of sunflowers. From then on we knew that our hearts were only set on each other.
The day after my 23rd birthday Wian told me that he had a surprise for me. “Just a little one for my birthday”, he said. I met him early that Saturday morning at his house. Set out was every single one of my favourite breakfast foods, a beautifully laid table and flowers. We finished eating and Wian took me outside. Waiting for us was the exact same car (a classic Jaguar) with which we went to our matric farewell in 2012. We drove out to a wine farm where we took a few photo’s and continued from there on to the next spot. From there we went to the picturesque Hidden Valley wine estate. I was asked to close my eyes and Wian lead me to a private picnic spot covered with tree branches and next to the most beautiful little pool. Laid out was a dream picnic again with all my favourite things and a bunch of red roses. Wian initiated a selfie next to the water and set the phone on timer. For a while he just hugged me and spoke the sweetest words. I felt so loved. He then went down on his knee and asked me to marry him. I was breathless, so ecstatic. He caught everything on video with the phone he said was on timer while a friend was hiding in the bushes taking photos’s. We enjoyed the picnic spot a while longer and then continued to the final surprise- drinks and platters with our family and friends at the estate’s restaurant. It was perfect- the way he knows me and loves me, every detail he thought of. I was (and still am) amazed
I loved it. We had 9 months to plan which were more than enough. Wian helped me a lot together with our friends and family which made the whole planning process extra special.
Both of us feel that less is more. We wanted to keep things classic and breathtaking all together.
Walking down the isle with my dad towards Wian together with the whole church ceremony that followed.
We didn’t really have a theme but tried to have a very natural look throughout.
We wanted everything to be geen, white, wood with a touch of rose gold. I asked our florist to have fun with the decor- different flowers, vases etc.- while keeping with the colour scheme. It exceeded our expectations.
Soon after the engagement we started growing our own succulents (in egg holders) which became the gifts for our guests. We picked up wood palettes on Wian’s family’s farm and they were made into the seating chart, menu, welcome board and name ‘cards’ for our guests. My aunt made my wedding dress and the bridesmaid’s dresses. This was extra special seeing that exactly 30 years back she made my mom’s wedding dress as well. Finally, we harvested olive tree leaves from our backyard for confetti.
Joe Foster’s “Vir jou gemaak”
We’ve now for many years that we were made for each other and therefore this song was perfect.
How everything just fell into place and how our loved ones helped make it possible. It was a dream day where many dreams came true and one where every detail of it will forever be remembered.
Always remember the real dream - to marry the one you love. When you hold on to that everything else will feel like a dream too.
We traveled through our beautiful country- Tulbagh and along the Garden Route. It was perfect.
