There is more to a wedding cake than simply something sweet for your guests to enjoy after dinner. Traditionally, a bride and groom cut their wedding cake together, sharing the first slice – this symbolizes their unity and their promise to always provide for each other. The cake is then shared with the guests in celebration. It is therefore important to choose a cake that embodies your unique tastes, and complements the theme of your special day. Let’s take a look at what kinds of cakes could accompany our “La Boheme” theme for this month…
Toni Jackson from Frosted Dream Cakes recommends a classic Victoria Sponge cake. Instead of a thick, sugary layer of e.g. fondant icing, the light and airy layers can be sandwiched together with smooth vanilla cream cheese frosting. “Top it off with a berry coulis to balance and complement the palette of rich flavours,” adds Toni.
And now for the fun part – decorating! Gone are the days when cake decorating meant silver balls and chocolate sprinkles. Wedding cake creators are currently looking to their gardens for inspiration - where pretty petals and leafy greens present themselves as perfect embellishments. “I would decorate the (La Boheme) cake with posies of fresh flowers in soft hues of mauves and pink with a touch of greenery to complete the natural look” advises Toni.
Another current trend, and personal favourite, is the Cheese Cake – and not your traditional cheesecake – a cake made out of stacking various wheels of cheese! As Maria Lambie from The Cheese Cake so beautiful puts it, “a gorgeous cheesecake made up of the finest cheeses, will take your guests on a mouth-watering adventure as they embark on a journey of discovering the art of pairing cheeses with divine preserves and beautiful wines, moving them from the traditional sweets to more sensual, savoury flavours.” Sound pretty wonderful, doesn’t it?
“Beautiful fresh fruits, jams and flowers can be used in between the cheese layers to add colour and flavoursome beauty to your cake. The earthiness and romantic beauty of a Cheese Cake will add memorable impressions, character and a focal point of delectable splendour to your Bohemian Wedding,” elaborates Maria.
