Gugu MAKHATHINI & Neville MAKHATHINI

Getting married on Dec 18, 2024 in Gauteng

How did your love story begin?

The story started in September 1995. He was an organizer of the Miss Summer beauty pageant in the East of Gauteng in Vosloorus.
I was one of the contestants, we went to the Venue with the other girls (contestants) with our hair done and all our outfit ready to compete for the crown. Only to find the venue closed and a note at the gate saying, "We are sorry to inform you that today's event has been cancelled, please contact Sipho Makhathini on this number for a refund of your tickets".

We were all furious and went to his house to give him the piece of our minds, when I saw him coming out of his house, all the anger went out the window. I saw this handsome, polite and well-mannered young man. I immediately said in my heart that "wow, I wish this could be my husband one day".
A month later we met in Church and he said, when I walk through the door at church, he was charmed by my stature and my beauty and he come to me after church to formally introduce himself.

Tell us all about the proposal.

It was the 15th of October 2003. He took me Emperors Palace. He booked the entire top floor of the restaurant just for us.
We never dated at all, we were never a boyfriend and girlfriend. We just knew and liked each other from a distance.

He started telling me how beautiful I was and that I would be an ideal wife for him. Then he ordered a drink for us, but a saxophonist showed up instead playing a beautiful soft sound and he went on one knee and proposed. I was ecstatic, my whole body started shaking. I didn't say yes on the day but only accepted his proposal 3 months later.
