Our love story began in 2020, though our paths had crossed a couple of times before without much interaction. It was my best friend from university who officially introduced us. She and Hein had been friends since high school, lost touch during university, and then reconnected afterward. The four of us—me, my best friend, Hein, and his best friend—became an inseparable group, meeting almost three times a week. At that point, we were just great friends, nothing more.
Then came March 2020, and with it, COVID. Hein and I happened to live close to each other, and since I had a permit to drive around, I often found myself needing a break from a full house. That’s when I started visiting him and his family. They welcomed me with open arms—the warmest, kindest people you could ever meet. I visited a few times, and even then, we were just enjoying each other’s company as friends.
Once the strict lockdown lifted, we found another connection—our love for sports. Both of us are competitive, especially in racket sports, so we started playing against each other. The rivalry was fun, intense, and gave us another reason to spend more time together. Then, Hein went away to visit family on their farm, and when he returned, everything changed. He told me he wanted to explore something beyond friendship because, honestly, we just couldn’t get enough of each other.
I was hesitant. He wasn’t my "usual type," and I had my guard up. But I agreed. And from that moment on, we were inseparable. I started organizing sports days where our families would compete against each other, followed by a good old-fashioned South African braai. Our families clicked instantly, making everything feel even more special.
In January 2021, he officially asked me out, and what we had was something rare—something we both knew was extraordinary. Now, in 2025, we’re engaged and planning our dream wedding. Looking back, I can’t believe I ever thought he was a red flag. Turns out, he was the greatest green light of my life.
In 2024, we lived together in Russia during incredibly uncertain times. We always said, "If we can survive Russia together, we can survive anything." And we did. By the end of the year, we returned home with an unforgettable journey behind us—one that few people will ever experience.
What I didn’t know was that as soon as we got back, he quietly started searching for the perfect diamond and worked with someone to design a deeply personal ring for me. I had absolutely no idea. Whenever the topic of engagement came up, he shut it down quickly. I also knew that financially, it wasn’t something we needed to rush, so I didn’t suspect a thing.
His birthday is on February 7th, and this year, he told me he wasn’t planning anything. He said that after an expensive January, he just wanted to take it easy. Then, his sister told me she was organizing a surprise party for him on February 8th. I was confused—if anyone was supposed to plan something for his birthday, it should have been me! And besides, he had specifically said he didn’t want a celebration. But I went along with it, keeping it a secret while planning my own little surprise for him the night before. I truly thought I was the one tricking him. Turns out, I had no idea what was coming.
The next morning, he casually mentioned that he was going to have a beer with his best friend for his birthday. Meanwhile, his sister picked me up, and we drove to what I thought was the surprise party venue. The whole week, he had insisted he didn’t want to do anything, and honestly, neither did I. I almost canceled with his sister multiple times, but she was so excited that I didn’t want to disappoint her.
When we arrived, she was acting a little strange—but that wasn’t unusual for her! She led me down a rocky, secluded path while I carried baskets of what I assumed were snacks and blankets for the party. I was convinced we were lost and kept suggesting we ask someone for directions, but she just told me to keep going.
And then, at the end of the path, there he was—kneeling.
I can’t describe the shock I felt. Never in my life did I see this coming. I always thought I’d know when he was ready to propose, but I was completely blindsided in the best possible way. I walked up to him, and for a few moments, we just stood there crying. Then he asked me officially.
I’m still in shock as I write this. It was, without a doubt, the best day of my life. To make it even more perfect, all our friends and family had been hiding nearby, waiting to celebrate with us.
