There were many memorable moments during our wedding day as every couple had. My most treasured moment was meeting my husband to be, just him, I and the priest in the chapel beforehand . The way he looked at me was something I will always remember. It was just so right!
Other highlights were arriving on horseback so, dressed in my wedding dress and good ol South African gum boots. Our rings were deli weed by an owl which swept down the aisle to land on my husband’s arm.
We released butterflies after our ceremony, which for us, just symbolised the transformation my husband and I had been through, as we have grown so much over the years.
And of course the major highlight was walking away as a married couple - that’s was all we wanted!
Nico and I met and immediately bonded over our love for sports and keeping fit. We entered the Absa Cape Epic and Nico said if we finish, we can take the next step in our relationship and move in together. We finished! The next year we finished, Nico secretly planned to propose to me and rode the entire race knowing that as we crossed the finish line, all our family would be waiting to witness his proposal.
As we pulled into the finishing Shute, I dismounted my bike and turned around to see Nico on one knee, his hand extended with my ring and a massive bouquet of red roses. In between tears and blurred vision I heard him say “sal jy asseblief met my trou”
The crowd erupted- the most magical, exciting and dust filled moment of my life.
We married the next year before the Absa Cape Epic and our honeymoon was spent in Cape Town, riding and Absa ensured we had honeymoon suites along the route.
