We have a mutual friend, who thought that we were perfect for each other. And after many months of chatting us up about the other person, our friend, decided to have a dinner party. This was the first time we actually spoke to each other. The next day we served together at an event run by our Ministry and that’s when the sparks started. Our first unofficial date was to the “photography and film expo”, and then a lunch date. We’ve seen each other every day thereafter since the lunch date.
Gary, did it the traditional way! He took me to my favourite restaurant in Johannesburg, Orient in Melrose Arch. We had a lovely lunch, then he got down on one knee and asked if I would marry him! We finished off the proposal by gazing into each other eyes, some lovely sparkling non-alcoholic wine and a decadent dessert.
The planning process was very exciting albeit with some challenges. We had many long evenings planning and negotiating the detail.
And Yes, we did. We looked for various décor elements, bridal wear and gift registry options. The “Inspiration” page also gave us some fantastic ideas.
We prayed for the wisdom and patience to plan our wedding. So we were very clear about what we wanted on our wedding day.
We also drew inspiration from online bridal sites, wedding shows, social media, friends and then we also had some of our own concepts we wanted to include in our wedding.
We had many….
Exchanging of the vows. Declaration before God, before witnesses of family and friends. Waking up on the wedding day and knowing that by the end of the day we would be a married couple, no longer be singles.
The anticipation of knowing you were about to marry the man/women of your dreams.
The excitement while getting dressed.
Our 9 year old daughters speech at the reception.
The fact that we were surrounded by magnificent views.
We didn’t have one. However we are both keen photography enthusiasts so our wedding had to have breath taking views that would complement the style and elegance of our wedding day.
I chose something that was flattering, comfortable and allowed me to be me.
My bridesmaid dress, was something that she felt comfortable in and happy to wear.
The emphasis was on relevance, comfort yet beautiful.
Décor, yes. We wanted something elegant and classic, and used a lot of crystal and gold, with a hint of blue.
Flowers, I wanted a Protea in my bouquet and the other flowers were chosen to match the Protea. Our birth flowers were not in season for our wedding.
No we didn’t.
All of Me by John Legend.
We both love the song and felt it was the perfect song to describe our love for each other. And it is a beautiful song…

Trash the dress, which was the next day. The ecstasy one feels from the extremely cold, splashing water, accompanied by the beauty of the untamed ocean surrounding you, is the most gratifying experience.
Start the wedding planning early, do it together and enjoy the process this goes a long way to building your relationship. Budget and spend wisely, there are always alternatives to what you like. We had a solid spiritual foundation, which stood us in good stead during some challenging moments.
It is the couples wedding, not the women’s so when you show your fiance’ off he will put you on a pedestal. Respect your man, and his desires too, the two make a perfect day!
It is vital for the man to also contribute towards the planning so that he has a sense of pride on the day!
Yes, we did. We spent our Honeymoon in the Beautiful Garden Route specifically in Knysna and Plettenberg Bay.
